You need to PLACE the new bunny rabbit's cage WHERE YOU WANT their litter box TO STAY PERMANENTLY. (Mine was in the corner of the bedroom).
Let your bunny rabbit stay in their cage for a few days. Let them get used to the new sounds and new place. You don't want them to get too frightened by too much too fast.
AFTER A FEW DAYS, MAKE A BLOCKED AREA of a few feet outside their cage. MAKE the blocked area TALL ENOUGH that it doesn't frustrate them that they can't get to the other side.
TAKE SOME Litter that's ALREADY BEEN PEED ON and has FECAL PELLETS, from the cage, and put it in the new litter box. PLACE the litter box outside the cage, within the blocked area you just made.
NOW let the bunny rabbit out of the cage TO ROAM WITHIN the blocked area. STAY WITH THEM while they are out of the cage for a considerable time. PLACE them in the litter box so they can get a smell of their own urine and fecal pellets. REMOVE THE CAGE from the area during this time.
NEXT watch them WHILE they are OUT INVESTIGATING the enclosure.
AND EVERY TIME they LIFT UP THEIR TAIL, PICK THEM UP QUICKLY, SAY "NO and their NAME" and PLACE THEM GENTLY in the litter box. AND SAY "YES and their NAME." Do this EVERY TIME, EVERYDAY for a few days. AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE EACH DAY. The same goes for whenever they want to start lifting their tail to pee in any other area of the house. Gently lift them up, say "NO and their NAME" and place them gently in their litter box. AND say "YES and their NAME." STAY CONSISTENT. NO CONFUSING DIRECTIONS OR WORDS, LET THE SAME TONE BE SAID FOR EACH TIME. SO THEY CAN ASSOCIATE RIGHT BEHAVIORS AND WRONG BEHAVIORS. AND ALWAYS FIRM BUT GENTLE.
When you are done with each session PLACE THEM BACK in their cage.
AFTER about 3-4 days OPEN THE BLOCKED AREA a few more feet, and REPEAT AS ABOVE, Until the bunny rabbit is able to remember to go back to the litter box EVERY TIME they need to go to the bathroom.
ESTIMATED TIME for a COMPLETE litter trained bunny rabbit is about 2-4 weeks. Depending. But if they take longer NO PROBLEM ...They WILL get the hang of it. Then you will no longer need to have the cage anymore. OR you can let them have the cage still if they are used to it BUT THIS TIME IT CAN STAY OPEN ALL THE TIME. They can go in and out whenever they want!
BUT NOTE: They WILL leave some fecal pellets throughout the house...this CANNOT be conttrolled by them (the fecal pellets are DRY, HARD, and like LITTLE STONES, so don't worry or be bothered.) BUT the majority 98% of fecal pellets WILL BE IN THE LITTER BOX, and their PEE WILL ALWAYS BE IN THE LITTER BOX.
A GOOD IDEA for their litter bucket is to buy a PLASTIC TOP PLACE MAT WITH HOLES in it. It's ONLY a few dollars. You can go here to buy it.
It's called a RESTING BOARD, used inside wire cages so they have something more comfortable to sit on. BUT I use it so when I jump in the litter box I will not be sitting in the litter when I go. The pee goes through the holes, and most of the pellets too. BUT you will still need to push off some fecal pellets that lay on top which don't make it through the holes. AND DO NOT USE CEDAR SHAVINGS...it can cause URINARY tract infections. USE PINE SHAVINGS. You can buy them in bulk sizes.
